 ABRA – ASSOCIAÇÃO BRACARENSE AMIGOS DOS ANIMAIS

(Animal Friends Association from Braga) ABRA is a non-profit organization set up in March of 2005 in Braga. Its aim is to help the animals from Braga that have known the wrong side of life. The major purpose of this organization is to take care of the dogs (or cats) that are sheltered in the dog pound and get a new home for them.
These animals are stray dogs /cats or they are taken by their owners to the dog pound because they don’t want them anymore, or because they are suffering from a fatal disease and have to be put down. The work in the dog pound is done by ABRA volunteers since April 2005. Before that, every dog or cat in the dog pound was put down.
A small group of volunteers goes to the dog pound everyday to pet, groom and walk the dogs. They also take them to the veterinary (when it is necessary) and welcome visitors who may be willing to take a dog with them.
Until now this organization has saved lots of dogs and cats from being put down (in April 2006 we had saved around 400 dogs and 80 cats).
We are being quite successful due to the adoption campaigns that we organize in strategic places of our city.
But there are so many more to save...!
Our slogan is: ”don’t buy, adopt and save a life”.
Our organization has a formal statement of cooperation with the volunteer firefighters from Braga, who help us to save animals when their mistreatment attempts public health. There has already been team work.
ABRA’s next mission is to promote campaigns at schools of our region, in order to sensitize children to the animals’ abandonment and mistreatment.
If you wish to help us, you can either become a member, a volunteer, a FAT (to shelter temporarily a dog / cat in your home), or you can give us your donation (money, food or blankets for the animals of the dog pound), or you can just adopt one!
