Adopting a dog or a cat is a very kind action and shows a lot of kindness but, on the other hand, it requires a lot of responsibility and dedication. Before choosing a new pet, you must think it over and see if you really have enough conditions for the happiness of both of you.
When adopting a dog will have to have into account: His size, regarding the space that you can offer; The time you’ll have for him; The choice of a baby or an adult dog; The temperament of its breed, if in case of a purebred dog; The animal gender;
The size of the dog is a very important factor in this choice. If you live in an apartment the ideal is a small/medium dog because he does not need as much space and exercise as a large dog. A large dog needs a backyard, where he can walk free, run whenever he wants and have a good shadow to rest. Despite having the backyard a dog still needs a lot of attention. You will have to play with him, caress him and keep him company for him to be a happy dog. A chained dog in a backyard is not admissible as they get very restless and nervous. Under these conditions the dog can become ferocious, because he gets no affection and no freedom at all.. You must have enough time to dedicate to your pet, as he feels and needs affection and attention. A dog that does not have his daily amount of care and play is not happy. If you find that you do not have enough free time to dedicate to an animal, but have space, get him company, a dog or a cat. This way, they will be together and will not feel the absence of the owner and will keep company one to another. The choice of the age of a dog is very important. Some people defend that it is better to have a baby dog, and some, on the other hand, prefer adult animals. Both sides have its pros and cons. Adopting a baby dog is always a delight, as they are very cute, more funny and, besides, one will be able to teach them the way we want. But they have the disadvantage of not knowing where to urinate, their teeth are yet to be born and will bite, chew and break things. Also, they may not have the personality or the size you desired, and this often leads to abandonment. An adult dog does not have those kid games anymore, but already knows he cannot urinate everywhere, will not chew everything he sees. His peersonality is already defined. A grown up dog is normally a calmer dog, a companion that, by gratitude to you for having saved his life, will be eternally grateful and faithful. The character of a puppy can never be predicted entirely. You can try to calculate it by looking at the personality of his breed and of his parents, but that is never 100% accurate. The only way to know a dog's character is to adopt him as an adult. You will also have to choose if you want a male or female. This depends if you do, or do not, have more dogs. If you join males with females you should consider neutering both (or at least one) to avoid broods; when joining males one should see if they are not too territorial, because it may cause problems, which can be even worst when there are females nearby.
To adopt a cat there are also some needs. You can have a cat in an apartment or in a house. In an apartment he’ll be safe. The animal should, in any case be neutered because males tend to urinate to mark territory and females turn very loud during the rut. If the animals are neutered, these problems are solved and the animal will be calmer. Adopting an adult or a baby? Well, pros and cons are similar to the dog case. Any cat or dog will adapt perfectly to an owner as long as the owner has patience and dedication towards him. Choosing a male or a female is also related with the fact that you have, or have not other cats.
